Prostores End of Life – Magento Go Shutdown

Posted Posted in blog

So eBay pulled the plug on Pro3ecomsstores and Magento Go customers today stating an end of life of February 2015. Given that the Enterprise Magento is going to be priced at about $1200 a month, smaller retailers are being directed to go over to BigCommerce which starts pricing at $34.95 a month.

This is an interesting twist on eBay strategy that I’ve never seen before. I’ve never seen eBay take a group of retailers and push them off to another company. Apparently eBay’s new strategy is to only mine the larger enterprise stores and put their resources into developing for the 10% top tier. This leads to some other interesting news.

Miva recently announced an eBay connect after years of not having such a thing, it’s a timely new product.¬† Other than feed connectors and the more expensive ChannelAdvisor solution, eBay sellers have scrambled for years to connect to an online store with their eBay inventory, or vice versa. The pickings have always been slim for a reasonably priced solution for the small retailer. Vendio has such a platform, and there are a few others, but none that are under $100 a month that can do the trick well. It will be interesting to see how well the Miva connector does.

Bigcommerce LogoBigCommerce has a solution as well but it has also been reported to be unreliable and not very feature-full. We will have to do more testing on this one.

So this all leads into migration for those on Prostores and Magento Go. Where to go? What to do?

Here are some of the options:

1. BigCommerce and the not so handy eBay plugin.

2. ChannelAdvisor, always a favorite of mine but a little pricey for small retailers.

business_partner_logo3. Miva, with a new eBay connector, it’s a possibility.

4. Any ecommerce platform  and feeds, such as GoDataFeed, etc.

5. Vendio, shoots out to eBay and Amazon, a little complicated on the theming, but possibly a contender here.

We will be exploring alternatives to these scenarios and just how easily we can migrate and successfully manage inventory on these platforms as we migrate our clients to these new platforms. Stay tuned for more on this subject.

And what about eBay support for eBay Stores smaller retailer? As a side note, this puts into play whether or not eBay will continue to support smaller retailers with their eBay Stores platform, since they are mainly focused on mobile sales on the eBay platform and the proof is in the pudding…. larger retailers. Sure, there are many people offering eBay Design for mobile eBay, but eBay has taken many of the features out of your hands and forced them into a methodology that removes much of the customization right down the line.
